Tree Care Definitions

The following is a list of is a list of definitions to help you understand the proposal you will receive.

BARK INCLUSION: Pattern of development at branch junctions that results in bark turning inward rather than its normal outward growth; often leads to structural instability and tree failure.

CANKER: Localized area of dead tissue on a stem or branch caused by fungal or bacterial organisms; may be perennial or annual.

CHLOROTIC: Lacking chlorophyll, yellow in color, usually caused by nutrient deficiency.

CROWN CLEANING: Removal of dead, dying, diseased, crowded, weakly attached, and low-vigor branches from tree.

CROWN RAISING: Removal of the lower branches of a tree to provide clearance from buildings, vehicles, and pedestrians.

CROWN REDUCTION: Removing branches to improve individual branch or overall crown structure.

DBH (DIAMETER AT BREAST HEIGHT): Diameter of the trunk, approximately 4 feet off the ground.

DECAY: Degradation of woody tissues by fungi and bacteria; undermines structural integrity of the tree.

FORMATIVE PRUNING: Pruning of young trees to create proper form and remove branches that will pose problems as tree gets larger.

GIRDLING: Restriction of trunk or branch growth, due to an object wrapped around the tree.

HEADING (STUB) CUT: Pruning to a stub or a bud resulting in either branch death or vigorous growth from one or more buds that is often not structurally sound.

LEADER: The topmost portion of the trunk that is able to grow more than the laterals below.

MULTIPLE LEADERS: When two or more main leaders develop and cause structural instability.

POOR BRANCH ATTACHMENT: When a branch forms an angle less than 45 degrees or more than 85 degrees with the larger branch/stem it is attached to. Less than 45 degrees can lead to a bark inclusion and/or failure and is usually found with multiple leaders.

SGR (STEM GIRDLING ROOTS): Restriction of trunk growth by roots growing in a circular manner, caused by planting a tree too deeply.

TOPPING: Pruning technique to reduce height by heading the main branches. Not recommended by arborists, as it leaves the tree structurally unsound.
